Whitney Houston: New Greatest Hits album due this fall

A new greatest hits album by Whitney Houston will be released this fall.

Billboard reports that, while a tracklist, title and release date has not been announced, sources have suggested it will be the first compilation to span her entire career and include the familiar hit versions of her chart-topping singles.

That would stand in contrast with Houston's first, and only other American hits set, "Whitney: The Greatest Hits," which was released in 2000.

The first compilation substituted remixes of her uptempo singles instead of the well-known original versions.

To date, the album has sold 2.6 million copies in the U.S., including 836,000 copies this year in the wake of Houston’s death on February 11.

“Whitney: The Greatest Hits” is currently the fourth biggest-selling album of 2012.

VH1 Divas to honor Whitney Houston

VH1 will pay tribute to Whitney Houston for its next installment of "VH1 Divas."

Billboard reports the network will tape the performance in Los Angeles in December, with Houston's longtime musical director Rickey Minor on board as executive producer.

No artists have been confirmed for the tribute to Houston, a three-time performer on "Divas" in 1999, 2002 and 2003.

The tribute has already received the blessing of Houston's family and her label partners at Sony.

"We all felt that if any show could pay tribute to Whitney's music, it would be 'Divas,'" VH1 president Tom Calderone tells Billboard. "December felt like enough time where it wouldn't be sad anymore, you'd want to celebrate her music."

Houston died February 11 at the Beverly Hilton; the coroner’s report confirmed that the 48-year-old singer drowned in a bathtub, with heart disease and cocaine use listed as contributing factors. It concluded that Houston’s death was accidental.

AUDIO: Whitney Houston 911 call released

The 911 call for Whitney Houston has been released.

Gossip site TMZ has posted audio of the February 11 call from the Beverly Hilton to authorities.

“This is security from the Beverly Hilton. I need paramedics; apparently I have 46-year-old female found in the bathroom,” said a member of hotel security. “I’m not sure if she fell or if she was in the bathroom with the water.”

The recently-released coroner’s report indicates the singer was discovered submerged face-down in hot water in the bathtub of her hotel suite with a unidentified white powdery residue left in a spoon on the bathroom counter.

The report confirmed that the 48-year-old singer drowned in a bathtub, with heart disease and cocaine use listed as contributing factors. It concluded that Houston’s death was accidental.

A personal assistant found her dead in the Beverly Hilton Hotel, the report said. The water was described as “extremely hot,” and the singer had scalding burns when she was examined. Houston was last seen alive by her personal assistant Feb. 11 between 2:35 p.m. and 3 p.m., the report stated.

On a counter in the bathroom, investigators found an ashtray filled with cigarette butts and a “small spoon with a white crystal-like substance in it, and a rolled-up piece of white paper.”

Newark residents stuck with security bill for Whitney Houston’s funeral

CBS2 reports Newark, New Jersey residents are not too happy to learn that they will have to pay the bill for extra security that was provided for Whitney Houston‘s funeral in February.

The city racked up $187,000 in police overtime during the pop icon’s funeral service, representing 5 percent of the $4 million budget for the year.

In Westfield, where Houston was laid to rest, $9,000 in police overtime was spent, a necessary cost to make sure no one got hurt, officials said.

“I think it’s absolutely ridiculous when you have people who are unemployed and homeless, people walking up and down the streets,” resident Quincy Ruffin said, suggesting the family should pick up the tab. “If they wanted it to go that far, do that much, they should have been the ones providing for it.”

At least one official defended the outrageous expense for the drug-addled star, who drowned in her bathtub at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, with evidence of recent drug use discovered by officials on site.

“I was able to be witness to the thousands upon thousands of people who were desperate to attend service but held back by barriers and officers of the law,” said Democratic Councilwoman Mildred Crump. “If they had not been there someone may have been trampled, seriously hurt.”

Whitney Houston’s autopsy results released

Whitney Houston’s autopsy results were released by the Los Angeles coroner’s office on Wednesday.

The Los Angeles Times reports the results described the singer submerged face-down in hot water in the bathtub of her Beverly Hills hotel suite with a unidentified white powdery residue left in a spoon on the bathroom counter.

Houston was last seen alive by her personal assistant February 11 between 2:35 p.m. and 3 p.m., the report stated.

On a counter in the bathroom, investigators found an ashtray filled with cigarette butts and a “small spoon with a white crystal-like substance in it, and a rolled-up piece of white paper.”

They also found prescription drug bottles on the counter and a small, plastic bag that had been ripped open. In a drawer, they found a portable mirror with more remnants of a white powdery substance. Coroner’s officials said they did not test the powder, saying that was a job for police. The Beverly Hills Police Department did not release any information about the substance on Wednesday.

Whitney Houston drowned with cocaine in her system

The L.A. County Coroner’s office has released the findings of their autopsy on Whitney Houston and have determined that her February 12 death was caused by accidental drowning, heart disease and the effects of cocaine use.

Billboard reports the coroner’s report states Houston was found submerged in a bathtub filled with water and lists "cocaine intake" as a cause of the injury.

According to spokesman Craig Harvey, Houston, 48, had cocaine in her system and that it contributed directly to her death. Marijuana, Xanax and Flexeril, a muscle relaxant, were also found but did not contribute to her death. He says the results indicated Houston was a chronic cocaine user.

Beverly Hills police said in a statement there was no evidence of wrongdoing in connection with Houston's death. Officials had previously confirmed that prescription pills were found in the room, but no mention of cocaine.

"We are saddened to learn of the toxicology results, although we are glad to now have closure," said Patricia Houston, the singer's sister-in-law and manager.

Houston was known to have struggled with drug issues for years, but her family had said recently that they believed Whitney had made significant progress in that area.

VIDEO: Oprah’s interview with Whitney Houston’s family

This past weekend, Oprah aired her interview with Whitney Houston’s family on her “Oprah’s Next Chapter” series.

Whitney's daughter, Bobbi Kristina, her sister-in-law Patricia Houston, and her brother Gary Houston joined Oprah for their first interview since the pop singer’s passing.

Patricia described the scene at the Beverly Hilton when she arrived at Whitney’s room.

"When I got into the room, I saw my brother [Ray, a security guard] trying to revive her, to the point of exhaustion." By then, the paramedics had arrived.

"I said, 'Ray, let it go.' They asked him to move. He was on his knees. He said, 'I tried.' He was so out of breath. I felt so badly for him. So badly for him."

Bobbi Kristina spoke with Oprah about her last day with her mom.

“That very last day, it was so, so early in the morning,” said Bobbi Kiristina, “I don’t why, but I went to go get her and I said, ‘You know, Mom, will you just come lay down with me.' She stayed with me all night and all day. She was rubbing my head, holding me, and I slept in her arms.”

Oprah asked Bobbi Kristina if her mother’s passing seemed real, so soon after the February 11 event.

“Sometimes, no,” she replied. “Sometimes it’s so surreal that I still walk in the house and it’s like, ‘Mom?’ I still call her name,” adding “I’ve accepted it.”

Whitney Houston’s will was released Wednesday in Atlanta.

Inside Edition reports the 19-page document confirms that Whitney’s estate will go to her daughter, 19-year old Bobbi Kristina.

The money will be placed in a trust until Bobbi turns 21; more money will be released when she turns 25 and the rest when she is 30.

Houston's mom Cissy is the executor; her brother and sister-in-law are the trustees.

Houston first drafted the Will in 1993 and amended the will in April 2000 when she was still married to Bobby Brown.

Whitney Houston makes US chart history

The late Whitney Houston has made some US chart history.

Billboard reports Houston has become the first woman to place three albums in the top 10 of the Billboard 200 chart at the same time.

"Whitney: The Greatest Hits" holds steady at #2 (sold 174,000 last week), "The Bodyguard" soundtrack jumps 38-6 (selling 47,000) and "Whitney Houston" climbs 37-9 (30,000 in sales).

Houston's placement of three titles in the Billboard 200's top 10 amazingly marks the first time in almost 44 years that an act has accomplished the feat.

The last time an act scored three simultaneous top 10 sets was on July 6, 1968, when Simon & Garfunkel were at Nos. 1, 2 and 10. That week, "Bookends" was tops, followed by "The Graduate" soundtrack in the runner-up slot and "Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme" at #10.

It’s not just the top 10 where Whitney’s fans have saluted her: Houston has 7 more albums on the Billboard 200 – making a total of 10 this week, including:

#16 – "I Look to You”

Whitney Houston’s death may be ruled accidental

Although Whitney Houston’s death remains under investigation, it is expected to be officially ruled an accident, sources tell E! News.

While the actual cause of death was temporarily listed as "deferred" on Houston's death certificate, pending the result of toxicology tests, "nothing suspicious" has been found to connect any physicians or other people of interest to Houston's case and the inquiry is nearing completion, the source says.

Plus, "she had no marks on her body whatsoever to indicate a struggle, and she was the furthest thing from trying to kill herself."

The L.A. County Department of Coroner will not comment, citing the ongoing investigation.

The E! News source says that the autopsy toxicology screen could be in the Beverly Hills Police Department's hands by next week and, depending on the status of other elements of their investigation, the case could be closed very soon afterward.

Sources have told E! News that Houston had prescriptions for antidepressants and anti-anxiety medications, and a handful of pill bottles were reportedly found in her room at the Beverly Hilton, where she was found dead in the bathtub.

Stay tuned.

Rihanna to play Whitney Houston in film?

It’s barely been two weeks since Whitney Houston’s death and there’s already talk about turning her life into a movie.

And, according to The Daily Mail, Rihanna is rumored to be among the shortlist of talent who are being considered to play the pop diva on the big screen.

Whitney's record label boss and close friend Clive Davis is at the helm of the project and he reportedly wants to get a script finalized as soon as possible so filming can begin.

Rihanna is in the running for the lead role, as is Jennifer Hudson, actress Vivica Fox, and American Idol singer Jordin Sparks; also being considered for the movie is Will Smith's 11-year-old daughter Willow, who is thought to be portraying the actress as a child.

The superstar's life story had been discussed before her death and Houston was reportedly excited about the project.

Whitney Houston’s I Will Always Love You returns to US Top 10

Whitney Houston’s passing has boosted her music sales in such a big way that the late singer has returned to the US charts.

Billboard reports Whitney’s signature hit from 1992 - it reigned for 14 weeks - "I Will Always Love You" re-enters the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart at #7.

The music industry website says the song’s chart return was fueled by an enormous resurgence in digital sales (195,000, up 6723%, according to Nielsen SoundScan) and radio airplay (18 million audience impressions, up 915%, according to Nielsen BDS).

Houston also placed two other former #1s on the chart: "I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)" (from 1987) at #35 and "Greatest Love of All" (1986) at #41.

Whitney Houston’s funeral is set for this Saturday in her hometown of Newark, NJ.

Whitney Houston re-enters Billboard top 10

Following last weekend’s death of Whitney Houston, her fans sought comfort in her music, enough so that she’s back on the US charts.

Billboard reports the diva's "Whitney: The Greatest Hits" album re-enters the Billboard 200 chart at #6, after it sold 64,000 copies in the U.S. (according to Nielsen SoundScan) in the tracking week that ended on February 12 - reflecting only one full day of sales after her passing.

"Greatest Hits" posted a 10,419% gain over its previous week's sales, when it sold just under 1,000 copies.

Houston also returns to the list with her 1986 debut "Whitney Houston" (No. 72 with 8,000; up 3,901%), "The Bodyguard" soundtrack (No. 80 with 8,000; up 5,213%), her last studio album "I Look To You" (No. 118 with 5,000; up 3,901%), 1987's "Whitney" (No. 122 with 5,000; up 2,274%) and "The Preacher's Wife" soundtrack (No. 183 with 4,000; up 3,913%).

There were more Houston albums purchased in the last week (101,000 - up 5,994% from 2,000 the week previous) than had been sold in all of 2011 and 2012 combined until her death (97,000).

The vast majority of the 101,000 albums sold last week were downloads - 91,000. That hefty digital sum isn't surprising, since there would be a relative few physical CD copies of Houston's albums on the shelves at brick-and-mortar stores. (Most retailers don't carry a wide selection of an artist's back catalog.)

Whitney Houston funeral confirmed for Saturday

Whitney Houston’s funeral has been confirmed for this Saturday in her hometown of Newark, New Jersey.

Billboard reports the service will be held in the church where Houston first showcased her singing talents as a child.

The owner of the Whigham Funeral Home in Newark said Tuesday that the funeral will be held at noon at the New Hope Baptist Church in Newark.

The funeral home said that no wake would be held and that there would be no public memorial at Newark's Prudential Center, the sports arena that the family had discussed as a possible venue.

The funeral service will be by invitation only, Carolyn Whigham said, reflecting the family's desire to keep the memorial more personal.

"They have shared her for 30 some years with the city, with the state, with the world. This is their time now for their farewell," she said. "The family thanks all the fans, the friends and the media, but this time is their private time."

The 48-year-old Houston died February 11 at a hotel in Beverly Hills, California, just hours before she was set to perform at producer Clive Davis' pre-Grammy Awards bash. Officials say she was underwater and apparently unconscious when she was pulled from a bathtub.

After an autopsy Sunday, authorities said there were no indications of foul play and no obvious signs of trauma on Houston. It could be weeks, however, before the coroner's office completes toxicology tests to establish the cause of death.
