Spice Girls musical Viva Forever! to close

“Viva Forever,” the musical based on the hit songs of the Spice Girls, will close at London's Piccadilly Theatre on June 29th.

BBC reports show producer Judy Craymer confirmed the news.

"We just can't make it work," admitted Craymer, who previously staged the hit ABBA musical Mamma Mia!. "It is with a heavy heart that we've had to make this very difficult decision to post closing notices. Viva Forever! may be taking its leave for now in the West End, but the legacy of Spice Girls will never fade."

The production, which was written by Jennifer Saunders, suffered poor ticket sales after damning reviews.

In a statement, the Spice Girls said they were "thrilled that the thousands of people who came to the show had as much fun as we did."

Individual members of the chart-topping group have since expressed their disappointment about the news, with Emma Bunton tweeting she was "totally gutted".

Melanie C, who is currently starring in a touring production of Jesus Christ Superstar, echoed those sentiments, saying she was "absolutely devastated" by the news.

Spice Girls planning reality show to replace Victoria Beckham

After last summer’s appearance at the closing ceremony of the London Olympic, The Spice Girls are reportedly reforming for a planned tour in 2014.

The Daily Record reports the girl group will be moving forward without Victoria Beckham (aka Posh Spice), and are planning a reality show to complete their lineup.

A source close to Victoria says she has told the other four girls that she now intends to focus on her family and fashion business and will not sing on stage again.

But the four remaining Spice GirlsGeri Halliwell, Emma Bunton, Melanie Chisholm and Melanie Brown – want to go ahead with the tour.

The group are said to be in talks with TV producers to create a reality series in which they would pick a new singer to join them in Victoria’s place.

The Spice Girls have sold more than 80 million albums worldwide.

VIDEO: Spice Girls reunite for Olympics closing ceremony

The Spice Girls reunited in London on Sunday as part of the Olympics closing ceremony.

Each of the Girls arrived at center stage in their own taxi, before hopping out to begin their two-song performance.

The group sang portions of “Wannabe” and “Spice Up Your Life” as they toured around Olympic Stadium atop the cars.

The Spice Girls were not among the surprises for Sunday’s closing, as pictures of the group rehearsing last week in London surfaced online in advance of the event.

UPDATE (08/15): It appears the International Olympic Committee does not believe in the spirit of global cooperation as they continue to shut down videos of the closing ceremony while not offering to provide clips of the full event. You can, however, watch the Spice Girls' performance by clicking the video provided, which will direct you to the IOC youtube page.

Spice Girls reunite to promote London musical

The Spice Girls reunited in London Tuesday to promote the launch of Viva Forever!, a new musical based on their hit songs.

The BBC reports Victoria Beckham, Melanie Brown, Emma Bunton, Melanie Chisholm and Geri Halliwell were on hand to help unveil the show at a central London hotel.

"We're going to be introducing a whole new generation to Girl Power," said Beckham.

Written by Jennifer Saunders, the musical explores the "bitter reality of fame" brought by a TV talent show. The show is the idea of Judy Craymer, producer of Abba musical Mamma Mia!

The launch event was held in the neo-Gothic St Pancras Renaissance Hotel, the location where the Spice Girls filmed the video for their breakthrough hit, “Wannabe,” in 1996.

Reunited on the same podium, the five ex-bandmates exchanged banter about Halliwell's exit from the group at the height of their fame in 1998.

"I've got to say these girls are amazing and brilliant and loving," said Halliwell. "Every time I see them, and I don't see them that often, independently and collectively they're really lovely. I'm really grateful to have good friends like this."

"To have our songs performed night after night in a theatre is an honor for us," Chisholm added.

"My little boy doesn't know who we are, so I can't wait for him to see this," said Bunton.

Viva Forever! opens at London's Piccadilly Theatre on December 11.

Spice Girls to reunite this year?

There may be a Spice Girls reunion this year.

UK tabloid The Sun reports Mel B has revealed the pop group are to reunite for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee at Buckingham Palace on June 4 in front of the Royal Family.

Mel B revealed the plans during an interview on Australian TV — when she was asked if the Spices will reform for the 2012 Olympics opening ceremony.

Mel smiled and replied: "Ooh, I think the Queen's Jubilee concert is the event I'd be looking at more closely for that to happen."

Mel — who was Scary Spice in the band — reportedly told the TV crew off-air: "I am going to be in such strife for saying that. It's all so totally bloody top-secret still."

The line-up for the show has yet to be announced, but the public will be able to get tickets to watch it in the palace grounds through a public ballot.
