Adele: 25 tops US charts for 2nd week

Adele’s “25” tops the US Billboard 200 album chart for a second straight week.

Neilsen Music confirms via Billboard that the project sold 1.16 million equivalent album units, including 1.11 million in pure album sales.

“25” sets yet another record as it become the first album to sell a million copies in two different weeks since Nielsen began tracking point-of-sale purchases in 1991.

In its first two weeks, “25” has sold 4.49 million copies – equivalent to 30 percent of all albums sold in the US over that period.

Produced by Greg Kurstin, Adele’s third album was launched with the lead single, “Hello”, which became an instant worldwide smash.

The set is Adele’s second US chart-topper following the success of “21”, which spent 24 nonconsecutive weeks atop the Billboard 200 to become the longest run at No. 1 for a woman in the chart’s history.

Adele smash Hello tops US charts for 5th week

Adele’s smash hit single “Hello” tops the US charts for 5th straight week.

Billboard reports the tune remains at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 at the same time as the singer broke sales records with the release of “25.”

"Hello" also tops Streaming Songs for a fifth week with 35.5 million U.S. streams, up 2 percent, marking another new record: it's the first song to tally five weeks of at least 30 million domestic streams, passing Baauer's "Harlem Shake", which did so for four weeks in 2013.

The hit also tops the Radio Songs charts as well as lists for Pop Songs, Adult Pop Songs, Adult Alternative and Adult Contemporary airplay.

The release of “25” also sees Hot 100 debuts for four other songs from the project including "When We Were Young" (No. 22), "Water Under The Bridge" (No. 70), "Send My Love (To Your New Lover)" (No. 79) and "Remedy" (No. 87).

“25” became the first project to sell more than 3 million albums in a single week with 3.38 million copies in total, according to Nielsen Music via Billboard.

Adele makes US history with over 3 million albums sold in one week

The Adele juggernaut continues to smash US music industry records as “25” has become the first project to sell more than 3 million albums in a single week.

The UK singer’s third album debuts at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with opening week sales of 3.38 million copies, according to Nielsen Music via Billboard.

Only one of two albums to sell more than 2 million in a week, “25” surpassed previous record holder NSYNC’s 2000 release “No Strings Attached” (2,416,000 copies) in its first three and half days in stores.

“25” establishes more US records as the biggest selling album of 2015, surpassing the 1.8 million sold of Taylor Swift’s 2014 release “1989”, on its way to becoming the 20th album to sell at least a million copies in a week.

The set is Adele’s second US chart-topper following the success of “21”, which spent 24 nonconsecutive weeks atop the Billboard 200 to become the longest run at No. 1 for a woman in the chart’s history.

“21” has sold 11.2 million in the US to date and is the 10th-largest selling album in Nielsen history, which began tracking music sales in 1991.

The US numbers for “25” follow a record-setting week in the singer’s home country, where it also became the biggest selling No. 1 album in UK music history with opening sales of 800,307 copies.

Adele scores biggest selling UK No. 1 album in history

Adele has scored the biggest selling No. 1 album in UK music history with “25.”

According to the Official Charts Company, the singer’s third album sold 800,307 copies this week to establish a new record for the highest opening week sales in Official Chart history.

The project breaks the record previously held by Oasis’ 1997 album “Be Here Now”, which who sold 696,000 in its debut week – which only included three days of sales due to a Thursday release as opposed to a full week with a regular Monday street date.

“25” becomes the most downloaded UK No. 1 album, as well, after selling 252,423 digital copies in its debut.

The numbers are unprecedented, as Adele sold more copies than the rest of the Top 86 albums on the UK chart combined this week, and more than the last 19 Number 1 UK albums combined.

“25” earns double platinum status in the singer’s home country in just one week.

“The massive impact of 25 this week marks the moment that Adele has transformed herself from a phenomenon of our age to an all-time great,” says Official Charts Company Chief Executive Martin Talbot. “The statistics surrounding the album are staggering, topped by the simple fact that no album has ever sold 800,000 copies to reach Number 1 in the history of British music.

“What the future holds for 25 will unfold over the coming weeks and months, of course – but we can all be absolutely sure that more records will be toppled as Adele fever grips the nation in the run-up to Christmas.”

Adele has just announced dates for a European tour in support of the project.

The 36-date run opens February 29 in Belfast, Ireland, with multiple shows in almost every city on the schedule – including four concerts at London’s 02 Arena in March.

Adele sets new record for biggest sales week in US music history

Adele’s “25” has officially set a new record for the biggest single sales week in US music history.

According to Billboard, the UK singer’s third album has sold at least 2,433,000 in pure album sales in slightly more than three days to beat previous record holder NSYNC.

The boy band’s 2000 release, “No Strings Attached”, sold 2,416,000 sales to establish the single-week record for an album since Nielsen began tracking sales in 1991.

Prior to 1991, there was no authoritative music sales tracking service in the US and so it was mostly unknown how many copies of an album or song/single were sold in a single week.

To date, “25” is on track to capture an estimated 42 percent of recorded music sales this week.

Adele’s unprecedented domination with “25” has forced music industry forecasters to readjust their original estimate of 2.9 million copies sold this week to an even 3 million.

The sales tracking week ends at the close of business on Thursday and final sales figures will be available on Sunday.

Adele launched her third album with the lead single “Hello”, an instant worldwide smash which broke streaming and download records in its opening weeks.

Adele was a featured guest and performer on NBC’s The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon on Monday.

The UK singer joined the host for an interview segment and played “Box Of Lies” – a regular game/feature on the show – before performing “Water Under The Bridge” from “25.”

Adele revealed that her first attempt at her third album was not met with positive vibes during a preview meeting with her manager and legendary producer Rick Rubin.

“They just weren’t feeling it,” explained Adele. “Rick said ‘I don’t believe you.’ He wasn’t being mean. He was like, ‘if you want to put this out you can put it out but I don’t believe you.’ And he was a huge part to do with my second album, ’21.’

“I didn’t love the record. It was songs, not the record. It was just some songs I was writing for this record.”

Asked by Fallon if she rewrote or scrapped the songs they three weren’t thrilled with, Adele said “No, they’re away, they’re hiding; they’ve been banished. They’re not allowed. They weren’t good enough.”

Produced by Greg Kurstin, “25” was launched with the lead single “Hello”, which became an instant worldwide smash.

Adele on track for biggest sales week in US music history

Adele’s “25” is on track to set a new record for the biggest single sales week in US music history.

Billboard reports the project sold more than 2.3 million copies in pure album sales in its first three days, according to Nielsen Music.

“25” joins NSYNC’s 2000 release, “No Strings Attached”, as just the second album to sell 2 million copies in the States in a single week, and Adele’s latest is expected to pass that project’s 2,416,000 sales as the new all-time record holder by the end of November 23.

Music industry forecasters suggest “25” could finish the week with 2.9 million copies sold.

Adele launched her third album with the lead single “Hello”, an instant worldwide smash which broke streaming and download records in its opening weeks.

The UK singer premiered several tracks from the project during a performance at Radio City Music Hall in New York on November 17, followed by a BBC special and an appearance on Saturday Night Live.

Adele performed a pair of tunes from her newly-released album “25” on NBC’s Saturday Night Live over the weekend.

The singer’s first US television appearance in support of the project saw the UK singer deliver her smash hit “Hello” and the new single “When We Were Young.”

“Hello” was also featured in a Thanksgiving skit early in the broadcast.

Variety reports Adele’s visit on SNL with host Matthew McConaughey earned the late night program its second highest overnight rating of the past 10 months — behind only the November 7 telecast featuring Donald Trump — and stood as the evening’s top-rated program.

According to Nielsen, Saturday Night Live averaged a 4.6 household rating/12 share in the 56 metered markets, up 15% from the prior week’s 4.0/10 for an episode hosted by Elizabeth Banks.

In the past year, the only two episodes to have rated higher in the overnights was the Trump episode earlier this month (6.6/16) and the Jan. 24 show featuring “The Voice” judge Blake Shelton as host and musical guest (4.7/12).

Up next, Adele will perform on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon on Monday, November 23.

Adele: 25 sells almost 1 million via US iTunes on opening day

Adele’s “25” sold almost 1 million copies in the US via iTunes in its first day on sale.

Billboard reports the project sold more than 900,000 copies on November 20 on its way to what is expected to be the biggest opening week in US album sales history.

Music industry sources estimate Adele could sell as many as 2.5 million records this week to top the current record holder, NSYNC, whose 2000 album “No Strings Attached” debuted with 2,416,000 sold its first week.

The boy band’s second release remains the only album to sell 2 million copies in the U.S. in a single week.

3.6 million physical copies of Adele’s “25” were shipped to US retailers, with sources forecasting 1.5 million CD and 1 million digital download sales in its first week.

“25” is also expected to become the biggest selling album of 2015, surpassing Taylor Swift's 2014 release “1989”, which has sold 1.74 million to date this year.

Produced by Greg Kurstin, “25” was launched with the lead single “Hello.”

Adele performed her smash hit “Hello” at the NRJ Music Awards in Cannes, France on November 7.

The annual event, which honors the best in the French and worldwide music industries, also saw performances by Coldplay, Justin Bieber and Sting, among others.

The appearance marked the UK singer’s second live performance of 2015 following a recent taping for the upcoming TV special “Adele At The BBC.”

Hosted by Graham Norton, the BBC 1 program will air on November 20 – the same day Adele’s third album “25” hits stores.

Produced by Greg Kurstin, the project is the follow-up to Adele’s 2011 smash, “21”, which has sold more than 30 million copies worldwide.

“My last record was a break-up record,” says Adele, “and if I had to label this one I would call it a make-up record. I’m making up with myself. Making up for lost time. Making up for everything I ever did and never did. But I haven’t got time to hold on to the crumbs of my past like I used to. What’s done is done.

“Turning 25 was a turning point for me, slap bang in the middle of my twenties. Teetering on the edge of being an old adolescent and a fully-fledged adult, I made the decision to go into becoming who I’m going to be forever without a removal van full of my old junk. I miss everything about my past, the good and the bad, but only because it won’t come back.

“25 is about getting to know who I’ve become without realizing,” she adds, “And I’m sorry it took so long, but you know, life happened.”

VIDEO: Adele’s first live performance of Hello

Adele is previewing the first live performance of her new single, “Hello”, as part of an upcoming BBC 1 TV special to launch her album “25.”

Set for broadcast on November 20 – the same day “25” hits stores – “Adele At The BBC” showcases an interview and performance from the UK pop star in front of a live audience.

Hosted by Graham Norton, the 1-houtr special sees Adele answer questions from fans, including a rumor that she isn’t allowed to use Twitter without supervision.

"I mean, I'm not a drinker anymore," explains Adele. “But when Twitter first came out, I was drunk tweeting and nearly put my foot in it quite a few times. My management decided, 'You have to go through two people and then it has to be signed off by someone.'

“But they're all my tweets. No one writes my tweets – they just post them for me."

“Hello” is smashing all kinds of records since its release, which saw it debut at No. 1 in both the UK and the US.

The tune delivered the biggest opening week for a No. 1 UK single in three years and a record-breaking 7.32 million UK streams, while becoming the first-ever song to sell at least 1 million US downloads in a week.

Adele will launch “25” with a concert at Radio City Music Hall in New York on November 17 and a performance on NBC-TV’s Saturday Night Live on November 21.
