Rihanna breaks Vevo record

Rihanna’s new video, “Where Have You Been,” has set a new Vevo record for the most views in a 24-hour period.

Vevo announced that the pop superstar’s new clip had 4.9 million views in its first day on the site.

Vevo tweeted the news:

“NUMBERS ARE IN! After filtering out the BS & triple-checking, @rihanna #WHYBvideo24hrRECORD stands @ 4,937,281! Congrats! Your move, Bieber.”

The video site’s tease to Justin Bieber sets up a challenge for the Canadian kid’s fans to see if they can break Rihanna’s new record with views of his brand new clip, “Believe,” which debuted Thursday.

Of course, the whole thing is self-serving: both artists are on record labels under Universal Music, who are one of the partners in the YouTube-wannabe video site. Conflict of self-interest or smart marketing move? Either way, the money ends up in Universal’s pockets.

Regardless, Rihanna shared the news with her fans, tweeting:

“That Rihanna reign just won't let up! #WHYBvideo holds the new 24hr record for VEVO! My #NaviTrillAsPhuck thank you n congrats!”
